Goodness knows I love cooking almost all kinds of meals. Years ago, I attempted to be vegan but it was not a good choice for my health (I had chronic anemia). I immediately switched back to eating meats and dairy but I still enjoy vegetarian/vegan meals from time to time. They make good additions to my regular meals (doctors advise me to add more pounds, which means I have to eat more). On top of that, I love making them! I have to be honest though, I cannot rely on my creativity to make good veggie meals. Well, cookbooks to the rescue!
So far, I have three favorite vegetarian/vegan cookbooks namely Oh She Glows, Gorilla Food, and Fresh. These are my go-to cookbooks whenever I have serious cases of vegetarian/vegan meal cravings. I have a few others on my collection but I haven’t gotten the chance to try out the recipes (stay tuned for more vegetarian/vegan cookbooks posts!).
Oh She Glows (Angela Liddon)
This book is my first vegan cookbook! I found this gem when I first experimented with vegetarian and vegan cooking. Let me tell you, this book got me hooked on vegan cuisine. From breakfast to desserts and entrees recipes, Oh She Glows got them all. Liddon gives detailed explanations on each of her recipes, making it easy for all levels of cooks to follow. I also love how she dedicates some sections in the book for cooking and storing tips – I found this very helpful because I’m so-so on the organization department. Anywho, if you are new to vegan cooking, this book is a must-have.
- Cheerful Chocolate Smoothie
- Yogi Juice
- Cream of Tomato Soup with Roasted Italian Chickpeas Croutons
- 15 Minutes Creamy Avocado Pasta
- Cacao Crunch Almond Butter Banana Bites
- Raw Pumpkin Maple Pie with Baked Oat Crust
Gorilla Food (Aaron Ash)
Did you know that gorillas are vegan? I didn’t know until I tried a raw vegan restaurant in Vancouver, BC called Gorilla Food. This restaurant changed my whole view about raw vegan food. I used to think that raw vegan meals taste like nothing but…grass. Boy was I wrong. I fell more and more in love with vegan meals each time I came to this place. If they could make an omnivore like me become so obsessed with vegan food, then you know that they’re that good. They’re so good that I had to grab their cookbook! I loved their Gado Gado Nice Bowl and guess what, they included the recipe in the book! Now you may cringe at the thought of eating raw vegan meals but really, it’s not as crazy as you think it may be. First of all, they don’t taste like grass at all (lol) and this book will prove you that raw vegan food is as tasty as regular dish. There are wide variety of recipes in the book like breakfast, snacks, entrees, and drinks. Most recipes are straightforward and easy to follow. However, some of them require special appliances like food dehydrator and noodle maker. For this reason, I’ll have to stick with recipes that don’t necessarily need either tools (if you’re able to find substitutes for those tools, do use them!).
- Walnut and Banana Pancakes
- Oh My Gado Peanut Sauce (condiment sauce for Gado Gado Nice Bowl)
- Rawmein “New”dles (raw vegan ramen noodles)
- Oh My Gado-Gado Nice Bowl
Fresh (Jennifer Houston & Ruth Tal)
Fresh is a popular vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Toronto , which I had never had the pleasure to try. But luckily they got some cookbooks out and I bought their most recent one. After trying out a few recipes from the book I’m not surprised that the restaurant is considered as one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Toronto. They have tons of tasty vegetarian & vegan meal recipes that will sure satisfy your tastebuds (vegetarian and vegan meals are more than just salads, you know). If you love ethnic food, this book is for you. I mean, who can’t resist Malaysian Curry Laksa, Middle Eastern Platter, and Greek Pita? Even non-vegetarians will love to try them out.
- Fresh Pho
- Thai Tomato with Green Chilies and Kaffir Lime Leaves
- Middle Eastern Salad
- Avocado Bowl
- Peanut Lime Dressing (great salad dressing!)
- Fresh Mojito Smoothies
